9:30 a.m.

A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held for the Immokalee Area Improvements Project at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1. A tent for the event will be set up at Collier Area Transit (CAT) Immokalee Transfer Station, located at 155 Immokalee Drive, Immokalee, Florida. (A location diagram is at the end of this news release.)

All are welcome to attend. Speakers include Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-26); Commission Chairman Burt L. Saunders, District 3; Commissioner William L. McDaniel Jr., District 5; and Commissioner Rick LoCastro, District 1. Transportation Management Services Department Head Trinity Scott will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, and Transportation Engineering Division Director Jay Ahmad will provide a project overview.

This project has created a network of Complete Streets and improved transit by filling in sidewalk gaps, adding approximately 22 miles of five-foot-wide sidewalks, and building an additional 1500 feet of 10-foot-wide shared-use pathway along School Drive. It also added 32 intersection-enhancing treatments at priority intersections, enhanced bus stop amenities/shelters, including 22 bus shelters, 35 benches, and 25 bike racks.

Plus, the project created bicycle boulevards, including a five-mile neighborhood bike boulevard network with traffic calming and wayfinding, and includes comprehensive lighting improvements consisting of five miles of streetlights and 106 lit intersections. The project also added 20 miles of upgraded drainage swales, seven miles of drainage pipe, and 605 drainage structures.

These improvements have increased safety and accessibility for all residents of Immokalee. Better facility continuity has also improved connectivity, thus promoting greater walking, transit, and bicycling activity.

In addition, a new CAT Immokalee Transfer Station was constructed next to the Collier County Health Department on Immokalee Drive. It includes passenger and transit efficiency enhancements such as new bays for the buses to pull off the street, waiting platforms with benches and trash receptacles, restroom facilities, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements.

More than $13 million of the $23 million needed for this project was funded from a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (“TIGER”) Grant. This grant was designed to increase the existing pedestrian network by providing new facilities to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians where previously none existed.
