Special Needs Registry Overview
Special Needs Registry Overview and Registration
Special needs shelters are designed to assist individuals whose needs exceed the services provided at general population shelters. These shelters are intended for those who cannot safely remain in their home and have no other sheltering options during an emergency.
Shelters provide support to maintain an individual’s health to the extent possible under emergency conditions.
Program Guidelines
Individuals with disabilities are not required to use a special needs shelter. Some may be safely accommodated in general population shelters. Shelter capabilities vary depending on community resources.
Registering also enrolls you in ALERT Collier for emergency notifications.
Registration Criteria
- Individuals needing care beyond basic first aid
- Individuals dependent on electricity or oxygen
- Medically stable individuals with disabilities requiring assistance
Note: All registrations are reviewed by medical professionals and may be verified with your provider.
Shelter Location and Expectations
- Location: Palmetto Ridge High School
- Food and water provided (special diets may not be accommodated)
- Basic medical monitoring only
- No complex medical care available
- Limited sleeping space (cot or chair may be provided)
- Backup electricity available for essential equipment
- Conditions may be crowded, noisy, and offer limited privacy
What Happens If I Register?
Completing the registry does not guarantee placement in a special needs shelter. Placement decisions are based on individual needs and available resources.
Follow official communications from Collier County Emergency Management for updates. You may receive automated notifications during emergencies.
Depending on your needs, you may be directed to a general shelter, special needs shelter, or medical facility.
Registration Forms
Registration must be completed annually. Home health agencies are encouraged to use the online system.
Important: Complete all fields to ensure proper placement.
Residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities should not register, as those facilities must provide care during emergencies.
