FOG - Fat, Oil and Grease
FOG Program
FOG stands for Fat, Oil and Grease. When FOG is poured down the drain, it sticks to the inside of sewer pipes. The buildup of FOG in the pipes restricts wastewater flow, eventually causing blockages.
Our homes and businesses are connected by the underground network of sewer pipes that feed into the county’s sewer system. Collectively, what each of us puts down the drain can have significant impacts in how our sewer system operates.
When wastewater cannot pass through a blockage, it results in backed up sewers that can overflow into homes and businesses. Proper FOG practices are important in maintaining our plumbing systems and safeguarding the environment.
Recycle Your Cooking Oil
FOG recycling offers residents the opportunity to recycle used cooking oil instead of pouring it down the drain or throwing it in the garbage. Customers who recycle cooking oil help to keep it out of the sewer system and the landfill.
Cooking oil can be recycled and processed for use in many products such as soaps, biofuels and fertilizer. Cooking oil taken to a Recycling Drop-Off Center should be free of water, soap suds and food scraps. It should be transported in a non-breakable, leak-proof container with a tight lid. Please dispose of containers responsibly.
Residents
Here are some tips you can put into use at home to protect our community and environment.
COOL – After cooking, let oil cool down.
CONTAIN – Pour cooled FOG into old food containers like tin cans or glass jars. Never pour FOG down the drain.
RECYCLE – Take to your nearest Recycling Drop-Off Center to be recycled. To find a location near you, visit collier.gov/dispose.
Businesses
The Industrial Pretreatment Program is for businesses operating within Collier County. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of FOG entering the sewer collection system. Staying in compliance with FOG regulations in commercial establishments involves implementing best practices, conducting regular maintenance and ensuring employee training.
